Cameroon Launches Historic Minim-Martap Bauxite Project

In a landmark move for the nation’s mining sector, President Paul Biya has officially approved the operating permit for the Minim-Martap Bauxite project. The decree, N°2024/382, was issued on September 2, paving the way for the company CAMALCO to commence operations.

The symbolic handing over of the operating permit took place today, led by Professor Fuh Calistus Gentry, the Minister in charge of Mines, Industry, and Technological Development (ai). This event marks the beginning of a significant countdown for the project.

The laying of the first stone, with plans to recruit over 100 young Cameroonians is set for 2025. 2027 is anticipated for the launch of bauxite transformation into alumina.

This initiative positions Cameroon as the first country in Africa to establish a complete value chain for transforming bauxite into alumina. The project encompasses multiple sectors, including:- Energy; Transport; Logistics; Public Works; Mining; and Industry.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including the Director General of SONAMINES, CAMALCO’s Director General, and the country manager of Fortuna Holdings, along with several officials from MINMIDT. CAMALCO has committed to adhering strictly to the obligations set forth by the President and ensuring compliance with the project timelines.

The issuance of this operating permit is expected to yield significant socio-economic benefits for Cameroon, particularly for local and indigenous communities, in accordance with the new mining code. The project promises to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and enhance regional development.

This historic endeavour is set to transform not only the mining landscape but also the economic future of Cameroon.
