In a groundbreaking move, Cameroonian First Lady Chantal Biya’s social vaccine program has partnered with ICT University to tackle the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, and other social issues, particularly in schools. This historic agreement was signed on October 15, 2024, at ICT University’s campus in Yaounde.
The collaboration aims to leverage ICT University’s expertise in digital technology to spread awareness and prevention messages. Mbah Rose, National Coordinator of the Program to fight against STI-HIV, emphasised the university’s crucial role in the fight against HIV, stating that their expertise is vital in the digitalization of teaching and learning processes.
Chantal Biya, a United Nations goodwill ambassador for HIV eradication, has demonstrated unwavering commitment to combating the pandemic. Her initiative utilizes digitization to reach children and youth, who can easily access information through this medium.
ICT University’s Founder and President, Prof. Victor Mbarika, pledged the institution’s total support, highlighting the need for digital technology to effectively spread prevention messages. He commended Chantal Biya’s humanitarian efforts, acknowledging her as a global figure representing not just Cameroon, but the world.
The Program’s Objective:
The social vaccine program, spearheaded by Chantal Biya, focuses on eradicating STIs, HIV/AIDS, and emerging pandemics in educational settings. ICT University’s involvement brings much-needed expertise and digital technological equipment, such as computers, to aid in the fight.
The HIV Crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa
HIV remains a major threat in sub-Saharan Africa, with 1.3 million new infections reported in 2023, three times the target of fewer than 370,000 by 2025. Chantal Biya’s efforts are crucial in combating this pandemic.
