  • Says Under Biden, The Biya Regime Has Had A Relatively Free Ride

By Andrew Nsoseka

In a recent tweet, Tibor Nagy, former US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, and long-term US diplomat, has suggested that if President Trump appoints certain individuals whose names have popped up as potential office holders in high-level positions, the Yaoundé regime in Cameroon will face increased pressure over its treatment of Anglophones in Cameroon and the handling of the Anglophone Crisis.

“If Prez (President) Trump selects certain people whose names have come up for high-level posts the Yaoundé regime will get much more pressure over its mistreatment of its Anglophone population,” Nagy wrote.

He furthered by saying that under the Biden Administration, the “Cameroon Gov’t has gotten a relatively free ride”… hopefully that will change”, Tibor Nagy said.

Nagy’s comments echo his previous concerns about Cameroon’s handling of the Anglophone crisis, especially concerning the country’s human rights record which has increasingly been dismal in the face of the Anglophone crisis, political protests and even outright ill-treatment of persons deemed hostile to government or even just government personalities.

Tibor has over the years, advocated for greater US engagement on African issues, including human rights and democratic governance.

On the Anglophone crisis, the former diplomat has not had any kind words for the Cameroon government and sometimes even separatist leaders, whom he has chastised for failing to rise above their egos, and speak with one voice in a united front in such a way that any group or government can comfortably back them or put pressure for their issue to be addressed.

Since leaving office, Tibor Nagy has continued to advocate for several things and causes in the African continent. The Anglophone Crisis is one of those things that the diplomat touches on most of the time when he writes about things in Africa, especially neglected conflicts. He has been viewed by many as being sympathetic to the plight of those caught in the wave of violence that has engulfed people living in the two crisis regions that form the former Southern Cameroons.

It is not also known whether Nagy may return to serve in the Trump Administration if called, as he served in a high-level position up to when the Trump administration was replaced by the Biden-Harris Administration, which has been succeeded again by Trump and Vance.

Tibor Nagy is a former US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa. He also served as US Ambassador to Guinea, as well as Ethiopia. Nagy is a long-term US diplomat. He is also a Professor Emeritus of Texas Tech University.
