The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the reconstruction of Cameroon’s South West Region. Following an evaluation meeting in Buea, the IsDB field representative for Cameroon, Mohamadou Awal, praised the achievements made under the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions (PPRD-NW/SW).
“I saw the presentation related to all the infrastructure. The equation, the social equation economy is in progress. I think we completed our project on time. That’s why we are happy,” Awal said in an interview with the press. He also commended the cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as the implementing partner for the project.
The IsDB has provided significant funding for the reconstruction efforts in Cameroon, with a total of 32.25 million Euros allocated for projects in the North West and South West Regions. The bank’s funding has supported the reconstruction or rehabilitation of 56 schools, 24 health facilities, 21 water projects, two bridges, and five community centres in the South West Region alone.
In addition to infrastructure development, the IsDB has also supported economic revitalisation efforts in the region. This includes the restitution of 475 farms, the strengthening of 50 farmer cooperatives, and the support of 221 agro-pastoral exhibitions. The bank’s funding has also enabled the reconstruction of 12 markets and the revival of 150 small businesses.
“I’m also happy with this collaboration with UNDP as our implementing partner for these projects. You know we have an agreement with all these U.N agencies especially UNDP for some of these special projects in these two regions- Northwest and Southwest. They did a fantastic job”, Mohamadou Awal said.
We are happy for that. We thank this team. We are going to continue with them.
The IsDB’s commitment to supporting sustainable development in Cameroon is part of its broader mission to promote economic growth and social progress in its member countries. As a key player in international development, the IsDB works closely with governments, international organisations, and civil society to address pressing development challenges.
