Buea, nestled at the foot of Mount Cameroon in the South West Region of Cameroon, is renowned not only for its rich history and vibrant culture but also for its serene urban green spaces. These tranquil oases, situated throughout the municipality, provide residents and visitors with peaceful retreats to unwind, promoting wellbeing and relaxation.
According to Mosoko Edward Motuwe, 2nd Deputy Mayor of the Buea Council, “The Buea municipality has established various green areas. You’ll find beautifully landscaped trees along our main streets, mitigating climate change issues. We’ve created relaxation spots and areas for people to connect with nature. By being nature-friendly, we reap numerous benefits, both directly and indirectly.”

In recent years, the Buea Municipality has made significant strides in developing urban green spaces, with plans to increase their number: “Planting more trees will enhance humanity’s quality of life. Protecting our greenery is our duty. Trees make our environment friendly, and in Buea, where floods are common, they’ll provide numerous benefits. We encourage roadside offices to create green spaces, while we, as the council, will expand our efforts.”
These urban spaces offer more than aesthetic appeal; they improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and foster biodiversity. Residents appreciate these green spaces, as Cha, a Buea resident, noted: “After a long day, I came here to rest. This is a great initiative by the council.” Cha added that more green spaces are needed, especially during the dry season, to provide shade for relaxation.
Viviane, another resident, praised the spaces, saying: “I’m waiting for someone here. This place is important for people like me, offering a spot to sit and rest.”
The municipality’s commitment to maintaining and expanding these green spaces promotes environmental sustainability. This effort not only beautifies Buea but also educates the public on nature preservation.
