Cameroon and the United States have completed a joint training programme to combat Improvised Explosive Device (IED) threats. The training, held in Yaoundé from November 4-8, 2024, brought together law enforcement officials, customs officers, border guards, and internal security personnel to enhance their knowledge and skills in identifying and mitigating IED threats.

The initiative is part of the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Security and Non-proliferation and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s collaborative efforts with the Government of Cameroon. This partnership underscores the commitment of both nations to combat terrorism and safeguard communities.

Insurgency and Terrorist Movements in Cameroon

Cameroon has faced significant security challenges in recent years, particularly in the Northwest and Southwest regions where separatist groups have been active since 2017. The conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 700,000 people and claimed approximately 6,000 lives. Terrorist groups, including Boko Haram, have also exploited the instability to launch attacks in the country’s Far North region.

The five-day training program covered critical topics, including: Understanding IED Threats, here, participants gained insight into the devastating impact of IEDs and emerging tactics used by terrorist groups.

On Vehicle-Borne IEDs, attendees learned about the risks and countermeasures for vehicle-borne IEDs. On Insider Threats, the training highlighted the importance of identifying and mitigating insider threats. The trainees were also trained on the emerging use of drones. Here, they explored the growing concern of drones in terrorist activities.

“This training is a testament to the strong collaboration between the United States and Cameroon,” said Joseph Love, Regional Security Officer at the US Embassy in Yaoundé. “By working together, we can enhance our collective security and protect our communities from the scourge of terrorism.”

The US-Cameroon partnership aims to promote stability and security in Cameroon and Central Africa, underscoring their unwavering commitment to protecting communities from terrorist threats and advancing efforts toward lasting peace and security.
