Cameroon’s National Refining Company, best known by its French acronym as SONARA, has announced that it will be halting its activities after a devastating fire that razed part of the company’s production unit, leaving behind considerable damage.
The incident, according to an official statement from SONARA, signed by its General Manager, Jean-Paul Simo Njonou, happened on May 31, 2019, at about 9:30PM, when an explosion in the company’s production unit occurred.
The company notes that due to the devastating nature of the fire incident, it will be halting its activities until further notice. It will also put some of its contractual works on hold.
On the night of May 31, news broke on social media that the National Oil Refinery had gone up in flames after a large explosion occurred in one of its units. This was followed by pictures and videos of the affected areas, showing flames engulfing part of the company’s production unit.
The impact of the explosion from the oil refining company also caused damage in neighbouring, structures, as it shattered down glasses as houses trembled from the explosion’s impact.
Cameroon’s minister in charge of Energy and Water Resources also paid an emergency visit to assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
