In what could easily be mistaken for a satirical sketch, 55 out of the 83 aspirants vying for Cameroon’s presidency have been caught in an embarrassing predicament: they don’t possess voter cards. That’s right, 55 of the 83 so-called aspirants described by some as clowns and hawks who danced to the gallery, seemingly eager to steer the nation toward a brighter future, can’t even participate in the very election they’re contesting.
If you left any of the 55 fellows, and gave them a task to be the only one contesting and voting in the October 12, 2025, presidential election, the country will be without a president, because the candidate does not qualify to participate.
The revelation came after the electoral body, ELECAM, released the list of candidates who were disqualified from participating in the upcoming presidential race. Unfortunately, they won’t be involved in the voting either.
The situation is dripping with irony. Many of these candidates had played to the gallery, spewing promises of development, freedom, real democracy, sweeping electoral reforms, greater civic participation, and, of course, the change that Cameroonians yearn for, yet, it appears their own basic civic engagement, which is to register for elections and vote to bring about the change, was still pending.
