In the complex political landscape of Cameroon, the Grand North has long been a bastion of support for the ruling CPDM regime. Recently, two notable figures, Bello Bouba Maigari and Issa Tchiruma, leaders of opposition parties who have been part of the alliance known as “The Presidential Majority,” are showing signs of reconsidering their ties with the regime. While their credibility remains questionable, the opposition must recognize the strategic opportunity this presents. Winning these leaders over could significantly alter the balance of power and shift the electoral dynamics in favor of the opposition.

The Grand North is not just geographically significant; it represents a substantial voting bloc that has historically propelled President Paul Biya to victory. For decades, the CPDM has relied on this support to maintain its grip on power, often sidelining the voices of the true opposition. However, the potential shift from Maigari and Tchiruma opens a door that the opposition should be prepared to walk through.

Engaging with these politicians could offer the opposition a chance to undermine the CPDM’s influence in the region. A strategic alliance could not only draw away votes but also fracture the CPDM’s long-standing dominance. Yet, this approach must be used with caution. The past alliances of Maigari and Tchiruma with the regime cast a long shadow over their intentions and loyalty. The opposition must be vigilant and discerning, ensuring that any engagement is framed within a broader strategy that prioritizes transparency and accountability.

It is essential for the opposition to recognize the risks associated with partnering with individuals who have, until now, been enablers of the very regime they seek to replace. The perception of opportunism could alienate voters who are yearning for genuine change. Therefore, the opposition must articulate a clear message that prioritizes the needs and aspirations of the electorate over political expediency.

Moreover, building a coalition with Maigari and Tchiruma should not come at the expense of the opposition’s core values. Engaging in dialogue is one thing; compromising on principles is another. The opposition must ensure that any agreement is rooted in a commitment to democratic governance, human rights, and socio-economic development for the people of the Grand North.

While the potential defection of Belo Bouba Maigari and Issa Tchiruma presents a unique opportunity for the opposition, it must be approached with extreme caution. A strategic engagement that prioritizes the electorate’s needs, maintains core values, and scrutinizes the motives of these leaders can pave the way for a more competitive political landscape in Cameroon. The stakes are high, and the opposition must navigate this terrain carefully to turn a potential risk into a substantial opportunity for change.
