The Social Democratic Front (SDF), Cameroon’s foremost opposition political party, has vowed to take legal action after a senior Gendarmerie Official ordered the dismantling of the SDF’s regional headquarters in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
In a statement released on June 18, the party said its regional headquarters located in the Oledzoa neighbourhood of Yaoundé was “unlawfully demolished on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, reportedly on the orders of a senior officer of the National Gendarmerie”.
The party in its statement noted that “This outrageous act, occurring just three months before the presidential election, is a clear sign of the regime’s growing anxiety in the face of the rising momentum of the democratic opposition. The SDF strongly condemns this act of political intimidation, which constitutes a serious violation of the civil and political freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution”.
To its militants and sympathisers, the SDF said it remains steadfast, mobilised, and more determined than ever to pursue the path toward democratic change and victory in 2025.
Legal Action on the Way
In its public statement, the SDF said its legal team is actively working to uncover the full circumstances of the incident in order to establish accountability and ensure that justice is served.
The action against the SDF, like many others, seems to be a ploy from the ruling regime, which has been accused of using every opportunity to intimidate and subdue opposition figures and parties, and things heat up to a much-anticipated presidential election in October 2025.
The Biya regime has been accused of stifling freedoms, and many of its officials have also gone into the bad books for often overstretching to punish perceived political opponents as a means to please the regime and seek favours in return.
