The United States has urged Cameroonian authorities to uphold freedoms of expression and the press following the announcement of the country’s presidential election date.
In a statement released by the US Embassy in Yaoundé, Washington welcomed Cameroon’s decision to hold the vote on October 12, 2025, but emphasised the need for a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.
“We underscore the importance of democratic governance and stability in Cameroon and Central Africa,” the embassy said, calling on all stakeholders—including political parties, civil society, and the media—to engage peacefully and respect the rule of law.
The statement stressed that journalists, activists, and opposition groups must be allowed to operate without harassment or undue restrictions, in line with Cameroon’s constitution and electoral laws.
“The Cameroonian people must have full confidence in their democratic institutions—not just on election day, but throughout the entire process,” the embassy added.
The upcoming election will be closely watched around Africa and the world, amid longstanding concerns over press freedom and political rights in Cameroon.
The US described this year’s presidential election as an “important step” in Cameroon’s democratic journey.
