The Prime Minister, Dr Joseph Dion Ngute, addressed a campaign rally in Kumba on October 8, during which local officials and supporters pledged their support for President Paul Biya in the upcoming election.

The event, which also served for the inauguration of the Kumba City Grandstand and a road project, featured speeches from local leaders who reiterated their backing for the President.

The City Mayor of Kumba, Gregory Mewanu, who also heads the local campaign team, told the Prime Minister that the people of Kumba have “every reason” to vote for President Biya. He cited a number of development projects in the metropolis, including the ongoing cooking gas plant at Kang Barombi, the Kumba-Ekondo Titi Road, and the new city grandstand.

Mayor Mewanu expressed gratitude for the upgrade of Kumba District Hospital to a Regional Hospital Annex and the creation of a haemodialysis centre. He also announced that, through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MINHDU), the construction of the road linking Tavern Street to Mbonge Road would begin next week.

The President of the CPDM Meme 1A Section, Honourable Lawson Tabot Bakia, stated that Kumba would give at least 70% of its votes to President Biya, citing the development he has brought to the city. He told the crowd that not voting for the President would be “challenging the success of their children as well as peace in the city.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by the King of Kumba, Senator Nfon Mukete IV Ekoko, and the Head of the Meme Divisional Campaign Team, Justice Chief Benjamin Mutanga Itoe, who both confirmed their intention to secure a significant victory for President Biya in the 12 October poll.

In his response, Prime Minister Dion Ngute called on the people of Kumba to vote for President Biya. He stated that a strong vote would help ensure continued development for the city and asked, “We have no doubt he will win but if, counting the votes, Kumba is low, will it be a good thing?”

The PM emphasised that the people of Kumba should demonstrate their support by voting for the President on Sunday.

Traditional Honour for the Prime Minister

During the event, the Prime Minister was honoured by local chiefs. Presided over by Nfon Mukete IV Ekoko, he was conferred with the traditional award of “The tiger that does not eat grass” in recognition of his leadership and contribution to the development of Meme Division and the nation.

The rally also included a donation of five million FCFA from the Prime Minister to the newly crowned national interpools champion, Kumba City FC.

Furthermore, the Kumba City Grandstand project was presented by the contracting firm. The Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Epoke, explained that his firm took over the first phase of the contract in August 2024 after it had been abandoned for over five years. He credited the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme Division, Chamberlin Ntou’ou Ndong, for his role in ensuring the project was realised.
