Fon Chafah in Bangolan

Calm may gradually return to Bangolan in Babessi Subdivision of Cameroon’s North West Region after Fon Chafah Isaac made a dramatic return to the village, publicly apologised to his people and declared his readiness to submit to traditional sanctions, including the payment of fines if required.

In a message to villagers, the monarch acknowledged his role in the crisis that recently engulfed the fondom and led to his controversial ‘dethronement’ by the Bangolan Traditional Council, known as the Ngumba.

“My people of Bangolan, today I speak as your Fon, as the custodian of our traditions, and as a son of this soil,” he began, setting a conciliatory tone.

Tensions had flared on 13 February 2026 when the Ngumba announced that it had dethroned Fon Chafah Isaac, accusing him of prolonged absence from the land for more than a decade and of destroying sacred ancestral objects, allegedly in the name of Christianity. The council declared that the community had parted ways with the monarch and initiated traditional rites to install a new Fon.

The declaration marked the second time such action had been taken against him, although he had continued to hold the title after a previous attempt.

In his latest address, however, Fon Chafah adopted a markedly different approach, accepting responsibility and calling for unity.

“I will not hide behind silence. I take full responsibility for my role in everything that has unfolded,” he said. “Where I acted wrongly, I acknowledge it. Where my decisions caused pain or misunderstanding, I accept it.”

Describing the throne as a heavy spiritual, cultural and generational responsibility, he admitted that “sometimes, carrying that weight, one can stumble”, but insisted that stumbling did not mean abandoning the journey.

Significantly, the Fon declared his willingness to submit to traditional authority rather than framing the dispute as a matter of state law. “If, in the eyes of our customs and our ancestors, a line was crossed, then I am ready to face the competent traditional authorities of this land,” he stated. “If a fine is required according to our customs, I will pay it. If restitution must be made in the manner our forefathers established, I will honour it.”

He stressed that accountability within tradition strengthens rather than weakens the throne.

While accepting his share of blame, he noted that the crisis did not stem from one individual alone but from “many voices, many reactions, many decisions spoken and unspoken”. He declined to apportion blame, choosing instead what he described as the path of responsibility.

Addressing accusations that religion lay at the heart of the conflict, the Fon said he had always coexisted peacefully with all faiths, noting that Muslims and Christians live side by side even within his own household. He maintained that he had never used religion as a weapon against culture, nor culture against religion.

Calling for reconciliation, he urged Bangolan people to see the moment as a turning point. “I am sorry – sincerely – for the harm that came from my actions. I am sorry for the division that followed. I am sorry for the pain many of you carry,” he said.

“But I do not lay down my responsibility because I apologise. I stand firmer in it.”

The Fon appealed to the community to correct what must be corrected within custom, cleanse what must be cleansed and rebuild what must be rebuilt.

“Bangolan is greater than this conflict,” he declared. “Let this be the turning point where humility meets strength, where tradition meets progress, and where responsibility meets renewal.”

His return and conciliatory stance now place the next move firmly in the hands of the traditional authorities and the people of Bangolan.
