Senator Elizabeth Regina Mundi, a prominent member of Cameroon’s ruling People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) party, has launched a new book with proceeds earmarked for combating maternal mortality in the country.
The book, titled Powered by Hope: Eighty, Captive, Rescued, was launched on June 1 in Yaoundé during an event attended by various dignitaries.
Spanning four chapters and 164 pages, the book chronicles Senator Mundi’s life from childhood through her rise to prominence and active participation in politics. It culminates with her kidnapping at age 80 by an armed group in the conflict-ridden Northwest Region.
Mundi was abducted on April 30, 2022, while en route to a wedding. She spent 30 days in captivity under self-proclaimed Amba Gen. Big Number in Batibo before being rescued May 30, 2022, by the Cameroon Defense and Security Forces.
“This is not just a book launch, but a celebration of life. This is not a work of fiction,” Senator Mundi said while recounting her harrow experience.
She added, “It is my story. One that I have lived and one that has tested the fiber of my being. This is not a story of sympathy, but of strength. It is living proof that God still works in mysterious ways.”
Senator Mundi said, “At a certain time, my body was weary, but my spirit clung to one unquestionable truth: God is with us. This is a testimony of survival against all odds.” She emphasised that she wrote the book because she believes such stories must be told.
“When mothers die in the process of giving birth, it is very painful,” she said, adding, “By buying this book, you’re joining a cause to save lives.”
While acknowledging the government cannot address the issue alone, she stated, “We must come onboard to sensitise women and everyone around us to tackle these issues women face during child delivery.”
Those who attended the launch lauded Senator Mundi, emphasising that her willingness to share her personal journey, coupled with her profound humanity, sets her apart. They remarked that she has established a remarkable precedent, demonstrating resilience through her adversities, and expressed great appreciation that the proceeds will benefit humanity.
Born in 1956, the author of Powered by Hope recounts her kidnapping, captivity, and eventual rescue as an 80-year-old widow and career politician in the CPDM party’s politburo.
According to observers, Powered by Hope serves not only as a memoir but also as a call to action for individuals and organisations to join the fight against maternal mortality and support the health and wellbeing of women in Cameroon.
