The Gambia Hosts Cameroon’s Opposition Leader Issa Tchiroma in Post-Election Crisis, Drawing Parallels to Its Own Political History

The Gambia has granted humanitarian sanctuary to Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who many maintain was the true victor of October’s disputed presidential election against 92-year-old incumbent Paul Biya.

In an official statement, the Gambian government confirmed Tchiroma’s arrival on 7th November, stating the move was made “purely on humanitarian grounds in the spirit of African solidarity” to ensure his safety during ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The official results, which declared Biya the winner with 53.66% of the vote, have been widely contested, sparking deadly protests. Tchiroma, a former minister in Biya’s government, had pre-emptively claimed victory. His insider status lends credibility to his allegations of electoral manipulation. The government confirms at least five fatalities, though opposition groups claim the true figure is far higher. Reports citing UN sources also put the number of those killed at over 40.

The Gambia’s decision carries profound symbolism, as President Adama Barrow himself came to power in 2017 after a political crisis that saw former leader Yahya Jammeh initially refuse to accept defeat. This required regional intervention from ECOWAS, giving The Gambia direct experience in resolving such stalemates.

The Gambian government has emphasised it is “engaging with relevant regional partners, including the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” to secure a peaceful resolution. It also reaffirmed that its territory “will not be used as a base for subversive activity,” positioning itself as a neutral facilitator.

The crisis highlights broader tensions across Africa between long-standing governments and youthful populations. With the situation remaining volatile, the international community is watching to see if regional diplomacy can achieve a peaceful outcome for Cameroon. On his part. Tchiroma has been periodically making social media outings in which he has continued to say that he won’t back down until the real verdict of the ballot is respected.
