In a strategic move to bolster its technical capabilities and support national development goals, Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel) has integrated 127 young technicians into its workforce. This initiative is a direct response to the country’s growing telecom demands and aligns with President Paul Biya’s vision for youth inclusion and economic emergence.

This strategic intake is a direct implementation of President Paul Biya’s vision for youth empowerment and positions Camtel to better meet the country’s escalating telecommunications demands.

The new recruits were formally welcomed at a ceremony on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at the National Emergency Telecommunications Network Centre in Ekounou, Yaounde. The event was presided over by the company’s General Manager, Judith Yah Sunday epse Achidi.

Selected from higher institutions across the national territory, they form the first cohort of Camtel’s Professional Integration Programme. This initiative is designed to provide recent graduates with their first hands-on professional experience within various operational sections of the state-owned company. Following a comprehensive two-week immersion, the technicians will now join Camtel’s field teams for a six-month placement, renewable once.

This recruitment drive is a strategic response to dynamic growth within Cameroon’s telecoms sector. The market is currently experiencing a surge in demand, fuelled by aggressive investment in 4G and 5G networks by major operators, which is rapidly improving data services across the country. Concurrently, the high volume of mobile money transactions is creating a significant surge in data traffic. Furthermore, government-led projects under the “Digital Cameroon 2030” banner are boosting the need for robust and secure enterprise connectivity. This expansion makes the need for skilled technicians more critical than ever, particularly to address challenges such as frequent fibre cuts and to ensure overall network reliability.

Aligning with a National Vision

In her address, GM Yah Sunday explicitly linked the programme to the vision of the Head of State, H.E. President Paul Biya, who in his swearing-in speech on November 6, 2025, underscored his commitment to creating opportunities for youth and women.

This connection places Camtel’s initiative squarely within Cameroon’s broader, long-term ambition to achieve economic emergence by 2035. This national vision aims to transform the nation into “a country that creates and distributes wealth fairly” and “offers equal development opportunities to all.” A key pillar of this strategy is the development of services and new technologies, with a specific focus on improving telecom infrastructure and expanding high-speed internet access for all citizens.

A representative for the new intake expressed their collective gratitude, stating, “We thank you for this opportunity and commit to being disciplined, professional, and to shun all malpractices in the exercise of our duties.”

The recruitment process saw over 270 applicants from across the country. Following a rigorous scrutiny of applications and interviews, the 127 successful candidates were selected on 7 November, signalling a swift operationalisation of the government’s policy direction.
