Cameroon’s telecommunications backbone, CAMTEL, has been widely commended for delivering uninterrupted network services throughout the historic apostolic visit of Pope Leo XIV from April 15 to 18, 2026.
The high-profile visit, which took the Pontiff across Yaoundé, Douala, and Bamenda, drew global attention and required a robust, fail-safe communications infrastructure to support international media, live broadcasts, and coordinated state operations.
Authorities, under the directive of Paul Biya, had set a clear objective: ensure a hitch-free visit. CAMTEL, acting as the State’s technical arm in telecommunications, rose to the challenge with what observers have described as a “flawless performance.”

Preparation began well in advance under the leadership of General Manager Judith Yah Sunday Achidi, who coordinated a dedicated task force to assess needs, reinforce infrastructure, and deploy contingency systems.
The company upgraded transmission capacity, strengthened optical fibre links, optimized network loops, and activated backup systems. These efforts were monitored around the clock by a fully operational Network Operations Centre, ensuring rapid response capability throughout the visit.

Despite the scale and intensity of the event, CAMTEL reported zero service interruptions. No fibre cuts, outages, or technical failures were recorded, a rare feat during an event of such magnitude and international scrutiny.
This reliability enabled seamless live coverage by global media outlets, uninterrupted communication for security and government services, and smooth digital engagement across platforms.
