In a final packed with drama, controversy and unrelenting resolve, Senegal claimed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title with a thrilling 1–0 extra-time victory over hosts Morocco on Sunday night in Rabat. The result marks Senegal’s second continental crown, further cementing their status as one of Africa’s premier footballing nations.
The lone goal that sealed the victory came in the 94th minute of extra time when midfielder Pape Gueye delivered a moment of pure brilliance, curling a stunning strike past Morocco’s goalkeeper to ignite celebrations among the Senegalese players, staff and travelling supporters. This was also to the delight of millions of viewers across Africa and the world who felt that Senegal was not been treated fairly by match officials.
The match — contested at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium was one of the most eventful in recent AFCON history. It featured a series of contentious decisions by the officiating team that tested Senegal’s unity and composure. Late in stoppage time, after a Senegal goal was controversially ruled out and a penalty awarded to Morocco following a VAR review, tensions boiled over. In an extraordinary scene, Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest, led by Coach Pape Thiaw and calmed only when captain Sadio Mané persuaded them back.
Morocco’s Brahim Díaz stepped up with the chance to score from the penalty spot, but his softly struck attempt was comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, keeping the score level and sending the match into extra time. This energized Senegal, and they built on that.

Senegal’s Journey to the Title
Senegal’s path to glory was one of consistency and resilience. The “Lions of Teranga” navigated a challenging group stage and knockout rounds, including a narrow semi-final victory over Egypt courtesy of a Sadio Mané goal, to reach the final.
Despite the suspension of key defender Kalidou Koulibaly earlier in the tournament and other lineup challenges, Senegal’s depth, discipline and tactical nous saw them through to the championship decider.
Triumph Against the Odds
While the officiating in the final drew sharp reactions from fans and pundits alike, with debates raging over the disallowed goal and penalty decision, Senegal’s ability to stay composed under pressure ultimately proved decisive. In extra time, they capitalised on a moment of opportunity to clinch victory and lift the coveted AFCON trophy.
As celebrations continue across Dakar and beyond, Senegal’s second AFCON title will be remembered both for the quality of their football and the extraordinary circumstances under which they achieved it.
