The Director General of Elections (DGE) at Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), Erik Essousse, has challenged the newly appointed Southwest Regional Delegate, Abdoullahi Boboe, to intensify voter registration efforts, strengthen branch offices and consolidate the institution’s performance as preparations begin for major electoral activities scheduled for 2027.

The call was made on 29 May 2026 in Buea during the official handing-over ceremony between the incoming and outgoing Southwest Regional Delegate of ELECAM. The event, held at the Board Members Complex, was attended by members of the Electoral Board, ELECAM staff and invited guests.

Boboe takes over from Zofoa Njoya Sake, who has been transferred to the West Region after serving as Southwest Regional Delegate for over two years.

Essousse said the new delegate’s immediate responsibility would be to sustain and improve the gains recorded by his predecessor while ensuring the effective implementation of ELECAM’s activities across the region.

“Our expectation is to further improve ELECAM’s activities in the Southwest Region. To achieve this, voter registration and the distribution of voter cards must continue vigorously,” the DGE stated.

“The new Regional Delegate has the responsibility to strengthen and reorganise our branch offices, supervise personnel, and ensure the effective implementation of all our activities across the region.”

Essousse expressed confidence that the incoming delegate would successfully lead the regional team and help position ELECAM for the electoral challenges ahead.

“If the new Delegate continues the good work carried out by his predecessor, who has been transferred to the West Region, I am confident that the team will continue to perform well and achieve even better results. Our focus now is particularly on preparing for the important electoral activities scheduled for 2027,” he added.

The Director General also explained that the transfer was part of a routine administrative reorganisation aimed at enhancing efficiency within the electoral management body.

“From time to time, it is necessary to reorganise and reshuffle our personnel. The objective is to place the right people in the right positions at the right time,” he said.

Responding to the challenge, the newly installed Regional Delegate pledged to work closely with election stakeholders to ensure that future elections in the Southwest are conducted in a transparent, impartial and professional manner.

“As part of the post-electoral dispute management process, there are always challenges to address. Our responsibility in this beautiful region is to observe, analyse and, where necessary, engage in dialogue with all stakeholders involved in the electoral process,” Boboe said.

He stressed that peace and development depend largely on the credibility and acceptance of electoral outcomes.

“Our objective is to manage upcoming elections with impartiality and neutrality so that all election stakeholders in the Southwest Region are satisfied with the work of ELECAM. When an electoral process is accepted by all stakeholders, what follows is peace, and where there is peace, development will come,” he stated.

The ceremony featured the reading of the resolution appointing regional officials, the official handing-over exercise, presentation of gifts to the outgoing and incoming delegates, and a cocktail reception.

With preparations for future elections already underway, the message from ELECAM’s leadership was clear: the new Southwest Regional Delegate is expected to build a stronger electoral administration and broaden citizen participation through increased voter registration and engagement.
