Bob Mike

It has been six days and counting, since the killing of Laisin Michael, popularly known as “Bob Mike”, in Kumbo, and the Cameroon military high command has yet to issue any statement explaining the circumstances under which the mentally ill man was allegedly beaten and shot dead. This loud silence is fuelling anger and frustration among residents and friends who new and interacted with Bob.

Bob Mike, a familiar figure in Kumbo and beyond, was gunned down on Friday, 20 March 2026, along the Tobin–Squares Road. Witnesses and multiple local sources allege that soldiers first assaulted him before shooting him at close range, despite his widely known condition and reputation as a harmless member of the community.

MMI Info quoted as source who remarked that “Everyone in Kumbo knew Bob. He was not dangerous…The soldiers beat him before shooting him at close range.” MMI quoted another resident who described the incident as sudden and incomprehensible: “He was just roaming as usual. We heard noise, and before we knew it, they had already shot him.”

As of the time of reporting, the military has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in the killing. However, residents insist that all indications point to government forces, noting that Bob Mike had long been known to both security personnel and armed separatist fighters operating in the area, and had never posed a threat to either side.

The lack of official communication has only deepened public outrage in Kumbo, where the incident has sparked both grief and fear. For many, the killing raises troubling questions about the conduct of security forces and the safety of vulnerable civilians in conflict-affected zones.

Bob Mike’s death has also triggered an extraordinary outpouring of tributes, underscoring just how deeply he was loved. Described by those who knew him as gentle, witty, and generous, he had lived with mental illness since the late 1980s but remained a constant and cherished presence in the town.

A former student of St Augustine’s College (SAC) Nso, Bob is remembered by classmates as intelligent and articulate, with an enduring command of English despite his struggles. Locals say he was known for his calm demeanour and kindness, often sharing what little he had and engaging warmly with passers-by.

His killing has struck a particularly painful chord. Many in Kumbo argue that if a man so widely known and clearly vulnerable could be killed in such circumstances, it sends a chilling message about the fragility of civilian protection.

Adding to the distress, reports indicate that his body was left lying by the roadside for hours after the shooting, further intensifying the community’s anger and sense of indignity.

Bob Mike, who had lived through nearly a decade of armed conflict in the region, is now being mourned not only as a victim but as a symbol of innocence lost. His burial was scheduled for Thursday, 26 March 2026.

As calls grow louder for accountability, residents and observers alike are urging the authorities to break their silence, clarify the facts, and ensure justice. Until then, the unanswered questions surrounding Bob Mike’s death continue to haunt Kumbo, and cast a long shadow over public trust in state institutions.
